The Robbo Cup - Alex's Stag Do

Champion: Alex

Winning Team: We're Slicer's Not Hookers. Simon (c), Dean, Dave, Laurence.

The Robbo Cup became the first official competitive Bomo Golfo, requiring handicap submissions, appropriate dress code, full wet weather gear, non-stop banter and top quality golf. The Robbo Cup represented part of Alex's stag do with big plans of taking the competition abroad....

Unfortunately that required significant levels of planning (and funds) and the tour was quickly revised to be held in none other than the birth place of Bomo Golfo itself. 3 days in Bournemouth. Golf, pool, beer, curry. All the perfect ingredients required for Bomo Golfo.

The Tour
Round 1, The Dudsbury, Friday 20th April 2012 - 1pm
We were greeted by breezy and wet conditions, but not deterred from teeing up on the first box and getting the Robbo Cup officially underway with, amazingly, 8 decent tee shots. Sadly that was about the peak of some of the play that day as the course, known for its waterways took no prisoners, 6 of 8 players not managing to break 100. The biggest event of the day was as we played up the 13th fairways and hearing what sounded like a fog horn blaring from the direction of the club house. Not knowing the house rules we continued to play on until the flash of lightning and clap of thunder rolled in. All around the golf course we could see heavy down pours...we seemed to have found the only place that the rain and, thankfully, lightning did not fall! Day day ended 2-2 thanks to Alex and Dave demonstrating something close to the sport of golf.

Round 2, The Isle of Purbeck, Saturday 21st April 2012 - 11am The greatest links course on the South Coast of England...and blindingly hard for those that have never had the pleasure of playing a round here. One must always remember the ferry takes ages and to allow plenty of time to get across to the peninsula! Buggies in force today to save the legs for Round 3 tomorrow (we are not sportsman!) and following the appropriate breakfast bap the game was underway. Team matchplay again of course but now the game had turned more serious. Well certainly for Tom who, after playing one good pre-tournament round was put on a 16 handicap, was getting highly frustrated with the new slices and hooks he'd invented yesterday and losing a considerable number of balls in the unforgiving heath. Simon, in the name of sportsmanship, took the opportunity to wish Tom luck on every tee box on the course. Another set of under-handicap scores but the tour was still tied with Alex & Phil taking home two points but Simon and Laurence countering to keep it all square.

Round 3, Meyrick Park, Sunday 22nd April 2012 - 10:24am It's the morning, we're tired, hungover, the taste of curry is still lingering, and there's been a lot of toilet abuse. The feeling of the last day of the tour. After congregating on the 1st tee of Meyrick Park for a tour photo we tee'd off to take on the 1st hole, a 220 yard par 3, over a small valley. Drivers and hybrids out! Whilst the team game was very close coming into the final round, Alex was leading the players championship by 6 shots over Dave, with Dean a further 5 shots of the pace. Alex's to lose. 9 holes in, Alex was 5 down matchplay against Dave...something about trying to make a competition out of game. A brief moment taken to focus and he held his nerve to take the players championship. Dean put in an excellent 87 to join Dave in second place. No prizes for being the first loser though. The Robbo Cup was taken comfortably by We're Slicers, not Hookers with a solid 3 of 4 matches won taking a 10 to 6 point victory.
