Bomo News

Bomo Golfo is the annual competition between some badly attired men, some wind, hopefully not rain and a sprinkling of abuse. Some good golf, lots of bad golf, some drinking, a big dirty curry, and often some pool which is not as good as we think any more.

Shan Winnersinghe

Well done Shan for joining the winners circle, a deserved champion at Celtic Manor!. Shan took up golf in 2015 and joined the Bomo tour with hopes of victory. A keen competitor in most sports the field had been fearing his rise to the top since he embarked on a dedicated investment in golf lessons. Over three days in Wales Shan not only scored best over three tough courses but also stayed up until 5am with Smez making sure that he could not be accused of taking the early to bed route to the trophy! The late night partier in chief (yes that's still Smez) came 2nd and continues to be the most consistent performer since his arrival in 2018, losing by two points to the champ!

Which Cunts?

Them Cunts beat These Cunts by 4 I believe.... I think. Them or These are the record of the event.
It was a close match. Maybe. No one can really remember the gripping matchplay which encapsulated the thrilling events of this week. Oh well, note to make better notes next year! We think Them Cunts were Paul, Dave Mac, Duncan, Simon and Shan. Well done if Them was You!

Marcus Aurelius Wintonius

A NEW WINNER! Well played Marcus, and welcome to the winner's circle. After three days of boring the competition with dead straight driving, very few balls lost and some decent all round scrambling, Marcus proved that youth does not always win by trouncing the competition this week. Real competition was provided by Simon who ran him close with two scores of 40 and 35 within a total of 102 (a score which would usually win - unlucky Si!). Third place was ever present Dave Maclean with 97 points and three consistent scores in the thirties. But Marcus romped home with a fantastic 107 points, second highest in Bomo History. Well played!

Kings of the Bath

Marcus was also captain of one of the teams, Drawshank Redemptions, who were taking on the little understood naming of PowerthirstPowerFade (look it up on Youtube!) captained by Dave Maclean. After three days battling in the sun, it was Dave's team who took the spoils. Another year of scant recordkeeping means the score is lost but the evidence is there for all to see and the Trophy is probably still at Dave's house.

This weekend's Ryder Cup style match was played at the three time actual Ryder Cup venue, The Belfry. The team captains were Simon with his Fists of Furyk versus Ryan and his team name who I forgot... Ryan's Rebels?. Another year with a set of misplaced records, we do know that Fists of Furyk were victorious, so congratulations to Simon, Tom, Phil, Paul & Alex. I hope it was a good match!

Dave Does It Again

Posted by Goliath on 4th September 2022  •  Comments (5)  •

After winning his first championship in 2016 Dave must have wondered where his second was? 3rd place in 2021 and 2018 showed his consistent nature and he went two better this year to take the championship with a fine 92 points. He was chased almost all the way by Simon who unfortunately faded on the last day, maybe focusing on the team cup instead!

Triple The Fun

This year we had 9 players and came up with a new team format. 3 times 3 balls. This was taken a bit seriously until the naming... so Dave's Dicks took on Paul's Pricks and Alex's Assholes. Yes we have truly run out of inspiration or just plain maturity. Anyhow, the golf was still as good as ever, with a mix of two v one matches and holes played for 6 points to craft a different championship. There still had to be a winner and the records show this was Dave's Dicks, i.e. Dave Dick,Simon Dick and Laurence Dick.. Well played but still Dave's Dicks.

PaulWon!. We certainly started to have a sneaking suspicion that Paul really wanted to win, a proven 'good' golfer who was losing out to a bunch of once a year fair weather golfers treating a golf weekend like a stag do! Well it came to him this weekend, solid golf on every day giving him the win but it was a close call with perenniel bridesmaid Simon and Dave only one and two points behind respectively! Well played Shooter!

Lift off for Ground Control

Posted by Major Tom on 10th June 2018  •  Comments (66)  •

The Simon v Tom rivalry went mainstream this weekend as they represented as team captains and both tried to fire up their teams for a much desired victory in Oxford. It was Ground Control to Captain Tom who came out of top, beating I Like Big Putts and I Cannot Lie 7-5 in a close fought match over the three days. Ground Control were never behind however and solid performances across the team with everyone contributing at least a point and having just enough to win the famous trophy.

The excitment of the new year and where Bomo will be played came to an end with the news from team captains Simon and Tom that 2018's weekend would be at the home of Inspector Morse and a university which Howard Marks went to. Oxford! Probably because it sounds like Otford and Tom thought he'd be home for tea each night. Another group of twelve now wait with baited breath to see what the teams will be and start the build up proper.

King Smez!

The individual competition had a clear winner, Smez taking first place with a whopping 101 points, 5 points clear of Dean in second who beat Paul by one further point into sixth. Turning up in a taxi to the first course and drinking like a man just released from prison throughout, Smez certainly made the rest of us look like we had forgotten how to have a good time, and on top of that destroying the field with three fine scores of 31, 37 and 33.

Team One Under Partridge left Norfork with heads held high after beating the challenge of How do you like how my golf tastes?. Coming back from one behind on Friday and Saturday, Shan's dream team produced a stellar performance on the Sunday winning 4-2 to take the cup 7-5. Star man Paul contributed three out of three points, plus two each from Simon, Marcus and Dean proved too much for HDYLHMGT.

2017 Draft Concluded

Posted by Phil Jackson on 7th March 2017  •  Comments (9)  •

Ready in good time for captains to prepare and allow building of those all important partnerships ahead of June (it really is months away!) the teams have been announced for 2017. A record twelve players have been signed up this year showing the rising popularity of Bomo whilst globally golf is reportedly dwindling in numbers. The match ups look even ahead of the tournament with some old rivalries to be renewed, everyone is particularly excited by the potential return of the Tom v Simon niggle match...
Team names are alas not announced yet, watch this space.

Follow follow follow follow, follow the yellow brick road. Yes you guessed it, Bomo is off to Norwich, land of canaries, home of Karen Colman the mustardess, canals for barges and most notably Alan Partridge. During the 11th century, Norwich was the largest city in England after London, and one of its most important... which is as interesting as the internet info got before I got bored. Maybe we'll brighten the trip with a visit to Longstanton Spice Museum or the cracking owl sanctuary nearby or indeed the Alan Partridge Norwich walking tour.

2017 Captains Elect

Posted by Referendum on 13th May 2016  •  Comments (9)  •

Amidst a background of global democratic turmoil with voters choosing 'wrong' all over the place, the players of Bomo Golfo did not let the people down and have elected two fine and worthy captains for 2017. Rekindling a rivalry spanning 21 years, it is Alex v Shan who will leads their teams out next June.

A friendship which has maintained a competitive streak since it began at UCL in 1996, initially with the usual test of who could smoke or drink or eat the most, this rapidly moved up a gear to who could attend University the least or sleep during most hours of daylight. This expanded into more normal pursuits of basketball dunk competions, table tennis, pool, tennis and most importantly, Tiger Woods golf 1999 on PS One. The path to Bomo Golfo started all the way back in a student house in Haringey with entire weekends spent playing 72 holes tournaments fuelled by constant drink, smoke and 5 x McRib eating contests. Without doubt it is with this history in mind that the golfing faithful have placed this year's competition in the hands of this pair to take their individual competitiveness and instill it on the all important Bomo Golfo trophy (and as importantly find some good smoking, drinking and eating too).

I think he hit the tree Jim.

Maclean sweep

Posted by Gloria Clemente on 12th May 2016  •  Comments (9)  •

Dave Maclean put his own demons to bed this weekend, entering Dreamland with the tightest of victories at Boom Golf Margate. Taking it to a white knuckle finish, he showed a steely resolve to fight to the last, coming back from a point behind Alex down the 54th hole to tie and win on countback, leaving Paul languishing a point off the win once again.

Sometimes when you win, you really lose, and sometimes when you lose, you really win, and sometimes when you win or lose, you actually tie, and sometimes when you tie, you actually win or lose. Winning or losing is all one organic mechanism, from which one extracts what one needs.

Dude looks like a winner

Posted by Margo on 13th May 2016  •  Comments (2)  •

Team Dude Looks Like A Birdie overcame the challenge of Dude Where's my Par? in the annual Bomo Golfo show down this week. Over three tough courses around Margate in Kent the team led throughout the weekend, albeit only by a point on Saturday night but winning three out of four matches on the Sunday to complete a whopping 5.5 to 2.5 victory. Rumours still abound that Simon attempted to change the course of the match by influencing members of the eventual winning team to stay out drinking all night (whilst he crept off to kebab and bed). Glad to report that the result was unaffected and nice to see a smile out of the Captain too!

Inglorious Dudes.

The players eagerly await 10th June when old rivalries will be renewed, new players inaugurated, new balls lost, new clubs christened and new courses hacked to pieces.

8 players again are preparing for the nadir of the golfing year when for some vast amounts of time, practice and money spent is put to use against the perennial "we don't need to practice" brigage.

Two teams will no doubt fight to the death and speculation is rife that a new name will be on the individual trophy". Who will be the Leicester City of Boom Golf Margate?"

2016 Captains Elected

Posted by D. Trump on 31st May 2015  •  Comments (1)

After a closely fought and high profile campaign, the captains of the teams for 2016 have been chosen. Paul Marshall with his slogan of "I could beat you all playing off 8" was elected as a captain, selected for his bravery in facing adversary, his ability to peak and trough at the drop of a hat and mainly because he'll be the only one sober enough to organise us each morning.

Dean Annison managed to downplay rumours surrounding his upbringing in the EDL heartlands to earn enough votes for the other captaincy. His team are looking forward to sharing his relentless energy, a proven winner he'll expect nothing else but buckets of passion and some damn fine golf from his team in pursuit of more silverware".

But will it be all brotherly smiles at the end?

He closed out the last five holes with an unstoppable run of treble bogey, birdie, treble bogey, par, double bogey, racking up 37 points on the Sunday to keep ahead of the field and seal victory by two points. Marshall vowed to fight on another day.

The strongly fancied Sex Beast were sitting pretty with a 2.5 - 1.5 lead on Saturday night but only one of the team could manage to score a point on the Sunday leaving Fore Horsemen to trot home with ease.

Press received reports of a disturbance in the corridors of the players hotel in the early hours of Sunday morning. Witnesses could only identify a small bronzed man seen holding a golf club in the halls after noises woke several of the players who were sensibly sleeping to prepare for Sunday's golf... Police state that no link has been made between this and the below photo, named as the only evidence matching reports of "some of those city" types seen wandering the streets of Bournemouth at 5am.

Robbo does it again

Posted by Alex... on 29th June 2014  •  Comments (899)  •

Alex Robinson survived the wind and rain of Nottinghamshire to pip old friend and rival Dave Maclean to earn a second individual Bomo Golfo title. With only two 7's on his cards all weekend (and one, ahem, 10) consistency was an unusual strength this year and meant Mrs Robinson was not happy when the frickin' giant trophy turned up home with her husband on the Sunday night.

Not so much of a robbery as a daylight massacre. Dave Chilvers hastily put together team of Madjic and Bomo legends Dave, Dean, Chris and Simon put Laurence's dreamteam lite of Paul, Alex, Stokesy and Chenners to the sword with a 6.5 to 4.5 victory on Sunday. The match was all but sealed with a 3-0 whitewash on the Saturday and Robbo Hood could not recover against Merry Men's strong matchplay showing.

Dean Annison won a close fought match at Bristol this weekend to take the individual honours. A pedigree field turned up for this years tournament. the top six all ended with scores within 7 points of each other. Individual points of 44, 43 and 40 were fine scores, none of which were Dean's showing again that consistency over the three days is key to victory. After the ceremony Annison was heard saying "I'm going to archive this trophy under W for win"

You couldn't squeeze a slice of paper between Who's Your Caddy? and Weapons of Grass Destruction this weekend in Bristol. Both teams brought their 'A' games to this year's matchplay tournament, resulting in a 7 point all draw and no winner in sight. Dean Annison had a long putt to win on the last green but left it hanging to leave everyone else hanging on for 2014 and another go at winning the fabled Bomo Cup.

It was a damn fun weekend though

Stag Reins at Own Stag

Alex "Robbo A" Robinson managed to defeat the odds and win the singles golf at his own stag weekend today. This was to be the inaugural Bomo Golfo annual tournament and a class field turned up to battle for the trophy over three days. Robbo A fared better during the lightning storm on day which which may have scared some poop out of others and crowned his weekend with a fine 89 at Purbeck, equalled by Dean on the day. Dave M and Dean both bettered Alex's score on the Sunday (whilst Dave gave Alex a right hiding in the team singles) but couldn't quite catch the winning score of 226, both tieing for 2nd on 230.

History is written by the victors.

Hooker's are Virgin Champions

The first ever Bomo Golfo tournament was won this year by We're Slicers not Hookers captained by upcoming wedding best man Simon against the stag Alex's Every Hole's a Goal An initially jovial weekend of sport and drinking was attacked repeatedly by golf courses with too much water, too much wind, too many hungover golfers and too much thunder and lightning on the Friday! After day one and two the teams were all square at 2 - 2 but Sunday proved a day too far for some with Simon, Dean and Dave M winning soundly to get their names on the cup.

The first and some say the best.
