2017 - Alpha Bomo Papa

Champion: Smez

Winning Team: One Under Partridge. Shan (c), Paul, Marcus, Dean, Simon, Luke.

2017's Bomo golf excursion was to the lesser known golf coast of Norfolk, referred to once as looking like the boob of Britain. In a departure from the usual format, twelve players joined the party ready to compete. The weather stayed away for the most excepting some proper links wind on the Saturday to create havoc with those who couldn't deal with it!

How Do You Like How My Golf Tastes? v One Under Partridge

Day One (2 - 1)

Friday's golf was at Royal Norwich, a leisurely start allowing everyone to turn up in time, eat a big lunch and have the seemingly customary rushed warm up before hitting the first tee. Smez gets the 'arriving in style' award, turning up in a black cab after a train from London and a plane from Bermuda.
Laurence and Smez in the opening group for HDYLHMGT proved too good for Dean and Shan, captain of One Under Partridge Dave and Tom in the 2nd game couldn't get past the experienced pairing of Paul and Marcus, but the lead was sealed by Alex and Duncan against out of form pairing Simon and Luke. 2 - 1 at the end of the day.

Day Two (3 - 3)

Saturday brought links golf again, this time with a shite load of wind and news reports of gypsys taking over the local village at Cromer. Alex proved a useless partner to Dave and they succumbed to Paul and Dean even with Dave's best efforts to hold them off until late. New boy Marcus joined Simon in continuing the fightback and earning a good point against Laurence and Duncan. Tom and Smez stood up for the How Do You Likers and kept the match level by beating Luke and Shan.

Day Three (5 - 7)

Sunday brought 11/12 players to Barnham Broom, with some big english breakfasts consumed to get everyone ready for the final push! Attempting to lead his team to glory and finally win a team trophy Alex again fell short, Paul proving his nemesis once again. Laurence and Shan renewed their rivalry of the high handicappers, Laurence reighing supreme and continuing to live up to his billing as no.1 team points scorer ever. Dean showed his mettle to bring down in form Smez, who looked somewhat tired on the day but still fought hard. With the match at 4-5 and all to play for, Duncan managed to crown his weekend's golf by losing to an imaginary opponent formed of random 3 holes from everyone elses cards, Marcus having had to miss the Sunday. At 4-6 HDYLHMGT had to win the final two matches and even though Dave won against Luke to bring it close in the final game, Simon's victory over long standing tormentee Tom was enough to give One Under Patridge a well earned victory and the cup.

Day One

Day one was the highest average scoring day of the weekend, 6/12 scores >30 and players taking advantage of good conditions. Luke turned up claiming a 10 handicap but started with a triple bogey whilst looking on with concern as both Alex and Simon drain birdie putts on the 1st. Smez, Paul and Dean all put in solid performances whilst Alex had a round to remember with a Bomo low score equalling 80 collecting 43 points.

Day Two

To the wind and sometimes brutal links conditions of Cromer GC. Quite rightly a UK top 100 course, reminiscent of Purbeck with undulating fairway, gorse surrounded greens and difficult options off the tees with the wind in play all day. Smez amazed those who had been drinking with himthe night before by compiling a 37 point round of 88 and jumping into the day two lead, ahead of Paul, Marcus and Alex, Dean lurking not too far back in 5th. Average scoring came down to just 25 on the day, the tough course and conditions proving an eye watering experience for many and relief was in many eyes at the 19th hole.

Day Three

With a field of 12 many players had a chance to be champion, but scoring proved difficult again today. Paul continued to be probably the most consistent performer at Bomo with a third score in the thirties earning him 3rd place with 95 points. Dean performed even more consistently however, shooting a handicap perfect 88 for 36 points and jumping to a total of 96 and clear 2nd place. First place however was taken with a clear 101 points by the man who travelled from afar, drank latest, slept less than everyone and still came out on top, the Smez. A lesson in life for the early to bed, early to tee posse! Special mention goes to Tom for competing in all three days but managing to still score 14 points less than Marcus who only played Friday and Saturday. Here's hoping fatherhood improves your golf!
